What to do When the mechanic who is suppose to fix your car screws it up worse!?

About a month ago i took my car (2000 Mitsubishi eclipse gs)to get an oil change. While i was there i got a price quote on something i needed because of a rejected inspection sticker because of a check engine light. Other than the rejection sticker my car was in perfect working condition i had no other problems with it ever!!I took my car back about two weeks later and they guy told me i needed a Catalytic converter i told the guy to do it because i couldn’t keep driving with a rejection sticker. The next day he called me and said that it was not that but in fact it was a relay that he needed to change so i said ok. After i got my car back he said drive it for a few days so it would have time to reset so i could get a sticker. With in that time i was driving my car i would drive it then shut it off at night and i would wake up to start it in the morning and try to start it it wouldn’t start! It turned out that for some reason the cooling fan was not turning off at night and i brought my car back to have it fixed. After a few days he assured me that now everything was fine he also had fixed the problem and my car was able to pass inspection i got into my car and saw that my check engine light was still on so i said how did i pass if my check engine light is still on and he gave me some bullshit story but i was glad because i had my car back and i had a sticker like i needed. At that time i paid about 320 dollars for the job and figured everything was fine so i took my car and drove it for the day. The next morning i went to start it and the car wouldn’t start but the battery was still fine like my lights were on and everything. I had my car towed back to the shop and the guy said he would figure it out and have it back to me in a few days. A few days later i went back and he said that the fuses were draining the battery and thats why the car wouldn’t start so he replaced the battery and installed a kill switch i was like what the hell is that and he said it was our only option for your car so every day before i started my car i needed to flip the switch on and when i was done using the car i had to flip the switch down . He charged me another 75 dollars. by this point i was getting ready to report them because i thought putting in a kill switch was ridiculous but i had to work all week so i just drove my car and was going to deal with it the next week, and apparently with the switch the guy said i would not have any problems again no matter what. After the week of driving my car one day i was driving down the street going about 45 miles per hour when my car just stopped un announced in the middle of the street! it happened about 4 times with in the hour it took me to get my car there! when i got there i went straight to the owner and said this is crazy and i want my car back to the way it was when i brang it here i also said after i let you people work on it my car went to shit and there should have never been a switch put in it in the first place and i want the switch taken out immediately. The owner apologized and said i was 100 percent right and they would fix my car for free and it would fine . A week later i called looking to see what was going on with the car and he said they were waiting for a relay and it would be about 4-5 days till they got it and he would call me. When he didn’t call me i just showed up there un announced and he told me i needed a new computer system for my car because there was a burn in the computer chip and that it was 1200 but they were looking for a used one so they wouldnt have to pay that much for a new one. He said he would call me when they found one. He also admitted that the burn was from when he switched the relays and that they were not going to charge me anything. At this point i think that my car is just getting worse and worse because he does not know what the hell he is doing and i know if i just show up there and have it towed to another place it is going to be thousands to fix what they messed up and i dont have the money to pay for it. i feel like even if he says the car is fixed i will be afraid to drive it because i will always wonder when im going to break down. im not really sure what i should do! i think they may have bypassed something in my car to pass it for inspection and in the mean time screwed up the wiring but i have no proof ! any ideas on what i should do? I understand i got taking advantage of and i was stupid to go back so i am all set with any negative comments !

Your car must of had a smog issue and the "check engine" light was on. The reading was like a p0130 or something that indicated it was a bad cat or a problem with the post cat 02 sensor itself. They checked and the cat was not causing the issue, so it is common to replace to 02 sensor. A typical OEM 02 sensor is about $75-150 dollars and its a plug and play type. but the mechanic wanted to save some $$$ and stuck in a generic "post catalytic converter" 02 sensor that they had to splice into place. When they did the splicing the wires were wrong. Or the spliced a used one off a different car that they had just laying around(no warranty remember and all new ones have a 30 day warranty minimum)

The bad 02 sensor reading and non-resettable check engine light would indicate a bad relay, so they changed it, but since it was the wrong wiring job and/or the wrong 02 sensor it just drained power trying to constantly "heat" itself. That’s why your car kept dying, that’s also why they stuck a switch in to cut the power because their dirty.

Geeze… That is a super dirty mechanic and you should call a attorney because you could own that shop. Get some pics before they finish you car and go cause them some grief!! Those jerks!

Really there isn’t much you can do but to report them to the BBB but your still out of money and a finely tuned car, i would say if anything happens again i would report them and find a more respectful auto shop, check out reviews online to make sure this guys are top Notch good luck

Hopefully they get it fixed properly and you don’t have to pay anything.

It’s too bad but there are hundreds of so called mechanics out there that don’t have a clue about what they are doing, they are mainly just parts changers that can’t diagnose any type of simple problems and lots of shops are just trying to rip you off by doing unnecessary work.

I have met some so called mechanics that I wouldn’t let put air in my tires.

I would say for the hassle you went through that they should refund your money and put at least a 6 month warranty on the parts that they changed.

I’m curious to know what automobile mechanic you allowed to work on your car. The Check Engine Light (CEL) should’ve produced a code which would have told the mechanic what system was malfunctioning. Did he do that?
