Llanelli was once the largest town in the world located in Carmarthenshire, Wales. Over half of the entire population speaks a Celtic language. The city is surrounded by many communities and villages. The town grew significantly with the success of the coal industry in the 18th and 19th century and then steelworks became important.
The brewing industry is still very important to the town and one of the most successful and longest running is Buckley's brewery. This brewery started in 1770 by a Methodist minister. The beer production has since been moved to Cardiff but the brewery in town still makes the Reverend James Bitter.
A popular outdoor attraction is the Millennium coastal pathway that goes between Pembrey and Loughor and is 12 miles long. A beautiful beach is Cefn Sidan. This beach forms the outer section of the Pembrey Burrows. This area was dangerous for ships and many sailing vessels were wrecked off this coastal area. This beach is spectacular because of the sand. The sand is very fine and cannot be used for sandcastles.
The WWT National Wetlands center is one of nine such nature reserves. It is just outside of Llanelli and is part of the Burry Inlet estuary. The wetlands protect the Little Egret. This wetlands is managed by the Wildfowls and Wetlands trust.
One of the most historic buildings in Llanelli is Llanelly house. This house is an excellent example of a Georgian town house from the 18th century. The property has been restored on the BBC show Restoration. It was originally built in 1714 by Thomas Stepney. It can be seen directly opposite the parish church.
Situated in the Parc Howard mansion is the Parc Howard museum. This museum was built by the Buckley brewing family. It holds a large collection of Llanelli pottery as well as other historical artifacts, art works, portraits and paintings.
