Mandatory Car Insurance vs Mandatory Obamacare?

You liberals do realize this is an apples to oranges comparison right?

I can CHOOSE not to drive a car and there fore CANNOT be forced to buy car insurance. Where in the Constitution is Government empowered to make me BUY anything?
Based on the responses so far it seems EVERYONE agrees since they cannot cite anything to the contrary. Congress has NO authority to create legislation that forces me to BUY ANYTHING.

They don't get it

What is the cost of life?

My parents are about to kick me out of the house and I would like to know how much everything would cost. I'm about to attend a university as well. How much would gas, 1 car payment, food for 1 person, clothing, cell phone costs, small apartment housing, insurance, and anything else that people can think of cost? If anyone is paying their own way through college, can someone tell me their monthly costs?

unless your parents are abusing you try to work it out with them first. life is hard enough and it is better to have their help or advice if you can. talk it out wit them .

if not then you have a lot to pay for like
college with books and all 10k a year at least probably more
gas 200 mo.
car 200-300 mo
car insurance depends on your age and record but you sound young so maybe 3k yr. 400/m0.
medical -mine is 94 mo.
cell phone 100 mo
food 50 to100/wk minimum if you eat in every meal-eat out 150-200 just for you
clothes -again depends on how you are -at least 1k year but if you are in to it then a whole lot more
rent, if its a dump 200 mo but prob more like 500 mo
utilities no included 150 mo
anything you do at night-movies,dates, drinks--50 wk bare min
haircut-male $25 mo female
unexpected cost thsi will surprise you like car repair -emergencies- gifts that you need to get-- cosmetic type stuff- fees taxes etc
income tax- im guessing you have a job so be sure and put aside enough- i had a friend who didn't pay and got time
im guessin about 2 k mo min.
cant think of anymore but good luck

Do you know that many auto insurance companies base your rate on your Credit Score>? Should this be legal>?

I just feel that if the State is going to require by law auto insurance ,, then your credit should not have anything to do with your rate! Many companies don't even tell you they are running your credit, but they do! This needs to be changed !
what's next they going to charge us what the wish on our next Big Mac based on our credit score?

First off, I have been a claims adjuster for 20+ years. Using a credit report to help determine rates is pure BS. As another poster stated many people with good credit suck at driving. Their the ones who are wealthy and too busy to pay attention while driving.

I have investigated 1000's of accidents and there is absolutely no correlation between bad credit and bad driving. I agree there is a correlation between good credit and the insurance company getting paid on time. That is their main concern. Using the credit report crap to charge higher rates is just a bonus to the company.

And folks let's be clear about the myth that insurance is required in all states. It is NOT!! It certainly should be but it is not.

People who are not in the insurance game (like nan6872) assume that insurance is required in all states because that is a logical conclusion, except when dealing with insurance and vehicle laws there is not much logic applied.

There are many states that do not require mandatory insurance but instead require "financial responsibility". For example I handle a lot of claims in Wisconsin. There are tons of insured drivers there drinking their great beer and driving home. Insurance is not mandatory there, however if you have an at-fault accident while uninsured the Dept of Transportation will revoke your license and registration if you do not sign a contract to repair the damages you are responsible for.
