I recently moved from Chicago, IL to Columbus, OH. I still have Illinois driver’s insurance and my car is registered in Illinois. My license is still an Ohio one from 3+ yrs ago (i know, i never changed it! bad bad). But i do plan on changing my Ohio License to update the mailing address.

How long do i have to get these done legally? 30, 60, 90 days?

30 days. And you will have to get an inspection done on the vehicle to be able to transfer the title to Ohio. (Basically this is just a VIN # confirmation, no big deal, and police dept. or DMV office can do it)

Drivers in Texas know how important it is to have good auto insurance. With the big cities in the wide open spaces, they’re plenty of opportunities to have accidents. Plus, theft can be a problem in Houston and Dallas. Another issue is the number of uninsured motorists on the road. With all these problems, it’s obvious that having a good auto insurance policy is very important to protect your financial well being. But how do you find a policy that fits your needs and your budget? It can be hard to find cheap Texas auto insurance, but by following a few tips and being a smart consumer, you’ll have a low cost car insurance policy in no time.

Companies In Texas

There many auto insurance companies doing business in Texas. The usual national chains like progressive and Geico are here, as well as many smaller national and local companies. In fact, the headquarters of USAA is located right in San Antonio. Any of these can be good choices for lots of motorists. There are also many smaller local car insurance companies offering policies in Texas. For example, Fred Loya insurance operates out of Austin. If you can’t find a good rate for more of the national companies, check out these local companies to see if they can give you a good deal.

The most important thing for getting low cost Texas auto insurance rates is to get lots of quotes online. Insurance companies give different rates to different drivers. In fact, the difference between the highest quote and the lowest quote you get is often hundreds of dollars. That’s why it’s so important to compare five or 10 quotes to choose the best plan and the lowest rate. Remember, don’t just look at the rate since the plans might also be different. You need a plan that fits your needs, whether it’s liability insurance, collision insurance, or a more comprehensive plan.

Other tips for getting cheaper quotes include keeping a clean driving record. If you have fewer tickets and fines on your record, the insurance company will give you better quote. Being a safe driver can add up to lots of money over the years. You might also go for a plan with a higher deductible. This means your out of pocket costs are higher, but you make up for it with lower monthly premiums. Another tip is driving a car with safety features like antilock brakes and airbags.

Isn’t making health insurance mandatory a form of tax?

President Obama stated,“What it’s saying is that we’re not going to have other people carrying your burdens for you any more than the fact that right now everybody in America, just about, has to get auto insurance. Nobody considers that a tax increase.”
So even if a person is perfectly healthy. They have to pay for health insurance they don’t want or need.
So on that note. Do the people who do not drive have to start paying for auto insurance even if they don’t own a car?
And how does imposing a penalty on someone who doesn’t want insurance going to make that persons life better. I can’t afford to pay for insurance. So how am I supposed afford a $3000 Plus penalty for not buying it?

Read more: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0909/27352_Page2.html#ixzz0RerpeVuP

That was one quote, of a few nowadays, that Obama probably wishes he could take back. Your logic is accurate. Make non-drivers buy auto insurance.
And somewhere, at some point, someone has to bring the Constitutionality of “forcing” the insurance on the public. Every now and then I catch a reference, to how the Government does not have that authority. Probably wishful thinking.
The “penalty” is also one of the many deeply troubling issues of this monstrosity called Healthcare reform.

I am 23 and have USAA. My plan currently covers something like $45 dollars a day towards a rental incase I total my car.

My father told me that I can’t rent a car till I’m 25 so it is pointless to be paying for this on my insurance. But why would they offer it to me if I am not eligble?

It’s not up to USAA to say, oh, most rental car companies won’t rent to you, so we won’t sell you the coverage. They can’t do that – that would flat out be age discrimination.

And, at 23, yes you CAN get a rental car company to rent to you. You just pay a surchage, because you’re under 25. Might want to up that daily limit a bit to cover it.

When one purchases a home the mortgage company requires you to cover the amount of the loan,($290,000) lots in my area are selling for ($70,000) , does this mean i should only insure for ($220,000) , since the lot is not being replaced?

In my years as an insurance agent I came across this situation many times. It is a particularly a problem where you have lakefront property with a cottage. Often the cottage is very small and of simple construction and the lot is, by far, the most significant part of the purchase price. In these cases I worked with the loan officer to satisfy their requirement for the proper replacement cost insurance so that the cottage was insured without wasting significant premiums insuring land.

That being said when you purchase your insurance you want to insure the replacement cost of your home not just the mortgage amount. The calculated replacement cost (not including the lot) will often be higher than the amount you chose to finance.

I can CHOOSE not to drive a car and there fore CANNOT be forced to buy car insurance. Where in the Constitution is Government empowered to make me BUY anything?
Based on the responses so far it seems EVERYONE agrees since they cannot cite anything to the contrary. Congress has NO authority to create legislation that forces me to BUY ANYTHING.

What is the cost of life?

My parents are about to kick me out of the house and I would like to know how much everything would cost. I’m about to attend a university as well. How much would gas, 1 car payment, food for 1 person, clothing, cell phone costs, small apartment housing, insurance, and anything else that people can think of cost? If anyone is paying their own way through college, can someone tell me their monthly costs?

unless your parents are abusing you try to work it out with them first. life is hard enough and it is better to have their help or advice if you can. talk it out wit them .

if not then you have a lot to pay for like
college with books and all 10k a year at least probably more
gas 200 mo.
car 200-300 mo
car insurance depends on your age and record but you sound young so maybe 3k yr. 400/m0.
medical -mine is 94 mo.
cell phone 100 mo
food 50 to100/wk minimum if you eat in every meal-eat out 150-200 just for you
clothes -again depends on how you are -at least 1k year but if you are in to it then a whole lot more
rent, if its a dump 200 mo but prob more like 500 mo
utilities no included 150 mo
anything you do at night-movies,dates, drinks–50 wk bare min
haircut-male $25 mo female
unexpected cost thsi will surprise you like car repair -emergencies- gifts that you need to get– cosmetic type stuff- fees taxes etc
income tax- im guessing you have a job so be sure and put aside enough- i had a friend who didn’t pay and got time
im guessin about 2 k mo min.
cant think of anymore but good luck

Do you know that many auto insurance companies base your rate on your Credit Score>? Should this be legal>?

I just feel that if the State is going to require by law auto insurance ,, then your credit should not have anything to do with your rate! Many companies don’t even tell you they are running your credit, but they do! This needs to be changed !
what’s next they going to charge us what the wish on our next Big Mac based on our credit score?

First off, I have been a claims adjuster for 20+ years. Using a credit report to help determine rates is pure BS. As another poster stated many people with good credit suck at driving. Their the ones who are wealthy and too busy to pay attention while driving.

I have investigated 1000′s of accidents and there is absolutely no correlation between bad credit and bad driving. I agree there is a correlation between good credit and the insurance company getting paid on time. That is their main concern. Using the credit report crap to charge higher rates is just a bonus to the company.

And folks let’s be clear about the myth that insurance is required in all states. It is NOT!! It certainly should be but it is not.

People who are not in the insurance game (like nan6872) assume that insurance is required in all states because that is a logical conclusion, except when dealing with insurance and vehicle laws there is not much logic applied.

There are many states that do not require mandatory insurance but instead require “financial responsibility”. For example I handle a lot of claims in Wisconsin. There are tons of insured drivers there drinking their great beer and driving home. Insurance is not mandatory there, however if you have an at-fault accident while uninsured the Dept of Transportation will revoke your license and registration if you do not sign a contract to repair the damages you are responsible for.

I am still saving to buy a home, so I never paid for everything myself. I know that there are a lot of different factors involved such as where you live and such, but what are all of the “hidden” costs involved in owning a home in the US? For example, mandatory insurance, HOA, electric, water, taxes, etc. I basically want to know how much more money I need to factor in when buying a house. Thanks.

Appraisal
Inspection
Closing Costs( title fees, loan fees, all that crap)
Mortgage insurance
Homeowners insurance
Technically, the buyer is responsible for the buyers agents commission. but seller always pays it.
Hazard insurance
Flood insurance (If applicable)
more utilities then an apartment
mowing ur lawn
house maintenance is a bitch.
