Why does our government waste so much of our tax money?

Example: we went to war in Iraq in March of 2003, there were no weapons of mass destruction, but we invaded anyway. Every day we pour more and more tax money into this war which was started under false pretences. We put casual drug users in prison for a long time, even marijuana offenders, and we, the taxpayers, have to pay for their incarceration. Not every American is interested in space travel, and it's not a necessity, but we still have NASA. We are losing the war on drugs, it's a waste of time, but we still have the DEA. Why can't we take all that money and set up a public option for health care, whilst allowing private insurance firms to continue?

They did not work for the money, it is not their money so they care not how much is spent or what it is spent on. Just as, you or I if we work our a$$es off for the money we spend it wisely if someone gives it to us we spend like a drunken sailor.
