Forget ‘mirror, signal, maneuver’, for some female motorists it seems the routine has been replaced by ‘mirror, mascara, and maneuver.’

A new poll by female car insurance provider Diamond has revealed that almost one fifth of women put on make-up while driving with three percent admitting they have even crashed their car as a result.

The risks of distractions while driving

Applying make-up while on the move may seem like a time saver, but it means that your full attention will not be on the road ahead. Being involved in an accident not only puts lives at risk, but it could also have a serious affect on your car insurance premiums – wiping out a no-claims discount.

Even if you’re lucky enough to make it to your destination safely, you could still be in trouble if you’re spotted by the police – as it could lead to a charge for careless driving.

So even though women are well-known for their ability to multi-task, driving is one time when it’s definitely best to stick to just one job.

Car insurance for female drivers

The good news is that women who play it safe behind the wheel can enjoy some significant benefits with greatly reduced car insurance costs.

With men involved in 97 per cent of dangerous driving convictions, according to Home Office statistics, women are considered the safer sex and as such several female-only insurance providers have emerged that claim to offer better rates and incentives to women because of their superior driving record.

There are a number of incentives available from these insurers including female-targeted options such as handbag cover, child-seat cover, mobile phone locators, priority roadside assistance and female-friendly repairers.

However, when choosing a car insurance policy it’s important to weigh up the offers available from these specialists against those from conventional insurers to ensure you’re getting a competitive deal. Compare car insurance online with a comparison website and to take into account the cover options available and the price to get value for money.
