Difference between different car insurance quotes?

Hi,

I am from the UK. I use gocompare.com and a few other websites to find the best quote for my car.

My current car insurance is certainly not the cheapest, and when I do an online comparison I can't see any difference in the type of cover that I will get between mine and many of the cheaper ones.

BUT ... My Mother always told me, "there's no such thing as a free lunch" ... which makes me think, "why are the cheap ones so much cheaper although they appear to be the same?"

so that's my question! Why indeed are the cheap ones a couple of hundred pounds cheaper when they appear to give the same level of cover as my existing one? There has got to be a reason why the more expensive ones are more expensive!
