Difference between different car insurance quotes?

Hi,

I am from the UK. I use gocompare.com and a few other websites to find the best quote for my car.

My current car insurance is certainly not the cheapest, and when I do an online comparison I can’t see any difference in the type of cover that I will get between mine and many of the cheaper ones.

BUT … My Mother always told me, "there’s no such thing as a free lunch" … which makes me think, "why are the cheap ones so much cheaper although they appear to be the same?"

so that’s my question! Why indeed are the cheap ones a couple of hundred pounds cheaper when they appear to give the same level of cover as my existing one? There has got to be a reason why the more expensive ones are more expensive!
