How much will a road trip from Seattle down to San Diego then across to Las Vegas cost?

Hi, we are looking to spend 3 weeks in the States driving down the pacific coast then finishing off in Las Vegas, we have return flights from the UK sorted, but we arent sure whether to rent an rv or just a car and stay at motels/hostels/hotels? My early research says they will be about $30/night, while renting a car for 3weeks, everything in (inc insurance, gas etc) will be about $1000. We will be travelling from mid August to early Sep. Any help would be much appreciated
We would also consider public transport ie greyhounds and amtrak, this would probably be much cheaper, right?
